| Motivation vs. Determination Motivation. It is what stirs our soul into action. It is what gets us to overcome our inertia and to start us off in a new direction. Motivation is our desire for something. It is what makes us start up in pursuit of what we want. Unfortunately, no matter how strong the motivation, it is almost always temporary. It is, after all, just the start. Motivation lacks the staying power because distractions will come and hardships will befall us. No matter how brilliant the start, there are pitfalls and traps awaiting us. Determination, however, has staying power. Whereas motivation is the spark that starts the fire, determination is what stokes the fire in the middle of the cold, dark night to keep it from dying. Determination maintains steadfast focus on its goal even when problems appear. While motivation is created by a want, determination is driven by a need. Around the state, there are hundreds of H.S. girls’ soccer teams who are motivated. All of them want a title. Some want a district title, some want a regional title, and some want it all – a state title. This want, is nothing more than empty emotion; a desire devoid of substance. A few, however, are determined to win these titles. They are unwavering in their task and undistracted from their goal. NHS Women’s Soccer isn’t excited about the “want”, but rather about the “need”. So ask yourself: Do I just have MOTIVATION or do I truly have DETERMINATION |
